Vitamin D: Can it help my child with eczema?

As summer quickly approaches, you may find yourself spending more time outdoors or by a pool with your children. If they have eczema, Vitamin D may help relieve them from common symptoms. Previous studies have concluded that people with eczema are more likely to have lower levels of Vitamin D which may lead to increased skin infections. There are many benefits to both sun exposure and Vitamin D supplements.

Sun Exposure

Ultraviolet B rays is a natural way for your body to produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, can be made within 15 minutes of summer sun exposure. Cholecalciferol helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D is also known for helping the immune system reduce inflammation and strengthen skin barriers.

Things to consider:

  • You do not have to tan for a long period of time or get sunburned for your skin to produce the amount of Vitamin D it needs. It should take half the time it takes for your skin to usually burn.
  • Be cautious about the amount of sun exposure your child gets, as too much can be dangerous and lead to skin cancer or premature aging.
  • Make sure to apply sunscreen. People with eczema tend to sunburn easier than others. Check out this sunscreen. It is free from common chemical ingredients and is water resistant, making it perfect for a summer day at the pool.
  • Tanning salons should be avoided. The UV radiation can put you at an even stronger risk for skin cancer.

Vitamin D Supplements

Vitamin D drops for eczema

Vitamin D supplements can be an effective alternative to sun, especially exposure during winter months. These supplements are safe, common, and have the same benefits as Vitamin D produced through sun exposure. Supplements can be found online or at your local drug store and are available for adults, children, and babies. Carlson’s Vitamin D drops are designed for babies and are free from added chemicals.

The connection between Vitamin D and eczema symptoms is ongoing. It is recommended to try Vitamin D supplements or more sun exposure for a limited time and see if your symptoms improve. In both cases, Vitamin D is not guaranteed or proven to improve eczema symptoms. Consult with your doctor before prolonged sun exposure or before taking vitamin D supplements.
