Below Are 3 Simple Tips to Prevent or Minimize Eczema.

Food Allergies and Eczema

There are certain food groups that are know eczema flares. If you have had early antibiotic use as a baby you may want to consider giving up these food groups separately for at least two weeks to see if they are contributing to your eczema. Always leave 2 weeks between food groups so you know which one is the culprit. Also make sure you know everything in that food group so you aren't accidentally cheating. 

Food groups that are known to cause eczema are:

  • Eggs
  • Cow's milk and dairy products
  • Nuts
  • Wheat
  • Soy

How do you know if one of these food groups are causing your eczema? Watch your skin or your child's skin when you eat the suspected food and for 48 hours after. Also, if you give up the suspected food group for two weeks and the eczema improves it is a sign you are sensitive to this food group. Also, if you begin eating it again and have an eczema flare you may want to consider removing it from your diet or your child's diet permanently. 

Other Known Eczema Triggers and What to Do About It

Remove or modify behavior to stop the aggravation to your eczema:

  • Dust mites: (vacuum regularly with a HEPA filter. Use mattress encasements that are dust mite proof. Wash bedding weekly in hot water. 
  • Makeup and Other Cosmetics: Only use hypoallergenic make-up and cosmetics. 
  • Mold: If you smell mold in your house call a professional.
  • Pet Dander: Consider giving your pet to a friend or relative for 2 weeks. Do not let the pet into your bedroom. Vacuum house and especially the bedroom regularly with a HEPA filter.
  • Pollen: Always rinse off after being outdoors. Keep windows shut and use the air-conditioning during hot weather and use an allergy friendly air filter and change regularly.
  • Soaps: Only use products recommended by the National Eczema Association.
  • Laundry Detergent: Use a Free and Clear detergent and always use the extra rinse cycle and never use fabric softener or dryer sheets.

Consider having your allergist test you for allergies. This can help you to avoid your triggers. Not knowing your eczema triggers is the worst way to manage eczema.

Daily Skin Care is Key to Managing Eczema - Simple Yet Extremely Effective

  1. Bath or Shower Daily (at bedtime) in lukewarm water for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Towel off and immediately apply an eczema emollient while skin is still damp.
  3. Dress in itch suppressing eczema garments (These can also be worn under regular clothing during the day).
