Keeping Body Temps Cool at Night

Keeping Body Temps Cool at Night

Elizabeth Scott

For many people with eczema, keeping cool at night can mean the difference between a good night sleep and a night full of itching. Sweating can trigger a flare up. Keeping the temperature regulated can be tricky at night as body temps fluctuate while you sleep.

There are a few things that can be done to keep cool during the night. Wet wrapping with a damp washcloth, clothing or specialty wet wrap product like Wrap-E-Soothe can help to cool down hot and itchy skin at night. Wearing lightweight and breathable clothing can also help. And in general, the suggested bedroom temperature should be between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep. And how about a cooling mattress? You may not be in the market for a new mattress but there are quite a few on the market today that advertise a cooler night sleep made with temperature regulating materials. A quick google search for “cooling mattress” brought up more than a few. We’re not experts in the mattress world, nor have we tried any of these, but here are some that caught our eye.

COCOON CHILL by Sealy – this mattress arrives in a box like so many of the new mattresses do these days. It's cooling is attributed to a “stretch knit cover infused with proprietary phase change material that absorbs and dissipates heat for a refreshing cool to the touch surface”. The core is memory foam, and it comes in a soft or firm option. It was also listed on Oprah's Favorite Things List 2016. They offer 100 night trial and free shipping.

Love and Sleep Mattress by Nest bedding  – according to the website this mattress keeps you cool by “Combining breathable, durable, USA made Energex foam with our SmartFlow Air Flow layer, and the support of high density Edge Support base foam, the Love & Sleep Mattress is available in Firm or Medium and features Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric for a Cool Night's Sleep For Less.” The website also says it’s foam is “CertiPUR Certified Foams and no chemical fire barrier means better value and better for you.” So if you’re concerned with a cooler night sleep and less chemicals this might be a good one.

Bear Mattress by Bear – this mattress is advertised as providing a cooler night sleep with "Graphite-Gel + high airflow, open cell Response Foam increase cooling and conductivity up to 7x more than traditional foam mattresses." "Utilizing CertiPUR-US® certified foams, no chemical fire retardants and a water-based bonding solution, the Bear Mattress is eco-friendly and has little to no smell." They offer 100 nights risk free.

We would love to hear from you! Let us know what’s your favorite way to keep cool at night for a good night sleep?
