Coconut Oil for Eczema

Coconut oil is a wonderful natural remedy for eczema. Coconut oil is anti-fungal, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and extremely emollient. When dealing with eczema - emollients are superior to lotions and moisturizers. The lauric acid in coconut oil is also found in breast milk and recent research shows breast milk applied to baby eczema is extremely effective in reducing symptoms. The human body converts lauric acid to monolaurin which helps to protect against viruses, fungus and bacteria. The antioxidant properties of coconut oil reduce inflammation and itch from caprylic acid, capric acid, vitamin E and K. The medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) and medium–chain triglycerides (GCT) in coconut oil reestablish the outer, protective layers of the skin then moisturizes it. Coconut oil also boosts the immune system. All the above makes coconut oil the perfect choice for treating eczema.

Tips on Using Coconut Oil

Topical

  • Apply the coconut oil as an ointment to eczema. Apply eczema clothing over the coconut oil and apply eczema treatment gloves when applied to hands. This keeps the coconut oil in place and reduces itching while the eczema absorbs the much needed moisture and nutrients.
  • Apply the coconut oil at night after a warm bath, and up to 3 times during the day.
  • Topical use on eczema is very effective at reducing eczema scars.

Coconut Oil Bath

  • Melt 2-4 tbsp. of coconut oil then add to warm bath water to moisten and nourish the skin. Pat skin dry with a clean towel immediately following the bath and dress in eczema clothing.

Oral Use

Eat 2-4 tablespoons of coconut oil daily. Add it to smoothies. Saute with vegetables or use it in place of butter and oil in baked goods. Or just eat it from a spoon.

Use on Baby Eczema

Use it the same way with babies and infants. Place coconut oil in a warm baby bath. Follow with rubbing the oil into baby eczema. Dress in eczema clothing.

Coconut oil penetrates deeply into the skin which intensely moisturizes dry, cracked eczema. It also can help prevent infections.
